Northside Hospital: Building stronger, healthier communities 3

Hospitals are committed to providing the best possible health care to the communities they serve. This is certainly true at Northside Hospital, where their commitment to support healthier patients and create a stronger, healthier community fabric extends beyond the hospital’s walls.

Northside Hospital continues to develop strong relationships with organizations that champion a culture of wellness and stewardship in the community. Health care, education, awareness and advocacy intersect through these partnerships.

Women’s health and wellness is a key health care need in Atlanta. Northside partners with the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance to help raise funds for ovarian cancer research and Hadassah Greater Atlanta to provide breast cancer education to high school girls.

Northside participates in the annual March for Babies event, the oldest walking fundraiser in the country, and collaborates with the March of Dimes to reduce incidences of early elective deliveries throughout the state. More babies are born at Northside Hospital in Atlanta than at any other hospital in country, making their valued partnership with March of Dimes a hand-in-hand relationship.

Northside also partners with some of Georgia’s leading athletic organizations to promote health and fitness including the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Track Club and the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia.

This culture of stewardship is firmly established across the Northside system, whose mission is to deliver compassionate, patient-centered health care. Last year, more than 4,250 employees with their families and friends donated 30,000 hours of their time to more than 100 service projects through Northside’s Community Connection Employee Volunteer Program. Annual projects include area walks and runs; collection drives for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Children’s Restoration Network and Dress for Success; BINGO with local seniors; and others.

Through the hospital’s Foundation, Northside works with students, teachers and administrators in more than 100 local schools by supporting school clinics with medical supplies, participating in career days and investing in other student programs that promote health and wellness, science, safety and anti-bullying.

The Northside Foundation also provides a number of community-based services designed to improve the health of individuals who live, work and play in the areas Northside serves. The community is invited to support these initiatives through participation in events and giving campaigns such as Tennis Against Breast Cancer in October and Celebration of Lights in December. Donations support leading-edge technology, research, clinical education and charity care at Northside and in the community.

In 2016, donations to the Northside Foundation provided:

  • 1,300 mammograms for underinsured women in our community.
  • 2,750 rides to treatment for cancer patients.
  • 250 teddy bears for mothers experiencing infant loss.
  • 130 gas cards to parents of preemies in the NICU.
