Gymnasts Excel

With well over 1,000 other gymnasts competing, two of MJCCA’s Perimeter Gymnastics teams shone brighter than most and were crowned regional champions at the Region 8 Xcel Regional Gymnastics Championships in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The competition, held May 11 -14, attracted gymnasts from eight states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.  Hannah Brett and Miyah Jones are members of the Marcus Jewish Community Center’s Perimeter Gymnastics team, and are 8th graders at Peachtree Middle School. Hannah won vault in the Xcel Platinum Level with a 9.625, and Miyah earned the gold on Xcel Gold bars with a 9.55.  “I started with MJCCA’s Perimeter Gymnastics 10 years ago, and the wonderful coaches have helped me persevere through so much, and have helped me grow,” says Hannah Brett. “Two years ago, I came in second on vault, so when I won this year, it was just the best thing that has ever happened to me!” Hannah was crowned a state champion on vault three times before qualifying for regionals in 2017. Miyah Jones says,“When I joined Perimeter Gymnastics two years ago, it was so nice to be a part of a program where my coaches and teammates genuinely care about me. When you learn a new skill, and the entire group of gymnasts and coaches stop what they are doing, and watch you, it is an amazing feeling.” MJCCA’s Perimeter Gymnastics participants train on top-of-the-line Olympic gymnastics equipment in the Besser Gymnastics Pavilion at Zaban Park on four events: vault, bars, beam and floor exercise.  AtlantaJCC.org/gymnastics

Kendra Scott is a fashion accessories and lifestyle brand of big dreams, colorful confidence, and inspired design. Founded on Family, Fashion and Philanthropy, they believe giving back is the truest form of success. A national charity, a hometown crisis, a local organization, or a friend in need, Kendra Scott always has something to give.  The Kendra Scott Avalon team recently heard about sisters Saville and Lilia Sullivan of Albany.  Saville, a sophomore at the University of Alabama, and Lilia, a high school junior, were each diagnosed with separate forms of brain cancer within weeks of one another. Immediately wanting to support the sisters and the research taking place at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where they are being treated, Kendra Scott is hosting a Kendra Gives Back party at their Avalon store in Alpharetta Friday, July 14 from 5 – 8 p.m. Twenty percent of all proceeds from the evening will go to Polo in the Pines, a local nonprofit that funds research for specific kinds of cancer. The 2017 Polo in the Pines event, being held at the Atlanta Polo Club October 7-8, will benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in honor of the Sullivan sisters. Butterfly Fest Next Month

The Dunwoody Nature Center today announced the return of its annual Butterfly Festival to be held on Saturday, August 19th from 10:00 a.m. until 4 p.m. Last year more than 3,000 people attended the festival, which has become a signature event for the Dunwoody community and draws attendees from throughout the state and beyond. This year’s festival will take place on the 22-acre campus of the Nature Center and, by popular request, will feature an additional butterfly tent that will enable guests to have a longer, less crowded experience surrounded by hundreds of live butterflies. In addition to the three butterfly tents, guests will be entertained all day with games, crafts, animal encounters and discovery stations throughout the park. Guests can participate in a nature scavenger hunt and find hidden treasures within Dunwoody Park, get their faces painted like a butterfly, enjoy live music, a birds of prey show, and other entertainment all day long. On-site concessions will ensure guests stay well-fed and the festival’s signature “larval lemonade,” along with other ice cold treats, will keep everyone happy and cool during the day. A Rare Opportunity

Andy Warhol: Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, Through Sept. 3, 2017
The High Museum of Art in Midtown is the exclusive East Coast venue for this sweeping exhibition featuring more than 250 works by famed pop artist Andy Warhol, including such iconic screenprint portfolios as “Marilyn Monroe” (1967), “Campbell’s Soup I” (1968), “Electric Chair” (1971), and “Mao” (1972). The comprehensive show is the largest exhibition of its kind, drawing exclusively from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation in Portland, Ore. Remarkable for their nearly exhaustive range, the Schnitzer Collections offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore the breadth of Warhol’s influential graphic production over the course of four decades. From portraits of Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe—imbued with a sense of the tragic—to evocative images of the Birmingham, Ala., civil rights protests and portrayals of influential 1970s personages, Warhol’s prints speak to the American values of the prosperous post-war consumer culture and foreshadow society’s preoccupation with celebrity, fashion, politics, sensationalism and scandal.
